My heart skipped a beat when the filter came off without the gasket

My last car had the worst oil filter arrangement I think I’ll ever see. Instead of a normal screw on filter like that it had an overly complex and delicate assembly. Because italian. Many small clips were broken, many small springs were almost lost.

I believe there’s a diagram on the forums. I’ll have a look.

Can’t find the diagram, this shows the circular clip that attaches to the filter (it retains two springs) which then clips to the oil filter housing.

It breaks every time it’s removed (talked to a Fiat tech who can confirm) and can’t be bought on it’s own, only with an entire £220 assembly. Most people, including me, just bodge it back together and cross their fingers.

I loved that car when it was working, which was about 10% of the time. Glad to see the back of it. Don’t buy a Fiat.

Oil changes always scare me now ever since my oil pan got stripped out or because I’m afraid I’ll find a milkshake

Did you strip it out or was it the Squicky Lube?

Tell me about it, that car had 70’000 miles on it when I traded it away. It had a lot of issues. Kinda feel sorry for the poor bastard that has it now, but I’m happy to see the back of it.

I made the mistake of letting Firestone change my oil when I was getting an alignment done. It was overdue, it was cheap, and even sitting on ramps given how low my car is it’s a bitch to change the oil (if you look up there’s maybe 4 inches between your face and car).

the next go round I do the oil myself as any good Oppo would. Plug goes back in and after two threads - thunk. Stuck my finger in and it was totally smooth, zero grooves. After fighting with it for way too long I got an oversized plug, flushed some oil through to push out the metal bits, then screwed the new plug in. Since then Ive succwsfully changed my oil but I’m still on nerves during the whole process.

So stupid. You can finger-tighten a drain plug in about 10 seconds but these assholes probably used an impact — repeatedly.
